Luis Gutierrez began his rental business 26 years ago with a $600 investment.
LGP’s story begins with Luis Gutierrez’s arrival in the United States from Mexico on March 14, 1989. After working for a large company, he was laid off without much of an explanation. At that point, Luis decided to start his own company. His philosophy was simple: “I came from Mexico with nothing, and I have nothing to lose.” As a result, LGP Equipment Rentals was born in 1997 in Bell Gardens, California, with an original investment of $600. Luis started the company with one cement mixer. After that, he bought more small equipment as he could afford it – pressure washers, welders, jack hammers and generators. Luis added, “Eventually, I purchased my first air compressor and my first Bobcat. Time went by, and after working hard with honesty and consistency, I now have more than 1,000 pieces of equipment – almost $15 million in inventory. God has been good to me!”
The family business expands.
In 1998, Luis married Lydia GutierrezPicos, and since then, she and Luis have worked together to make LGP Rentals a success. Luis noted, “I am very proud of my wife Lydia; without her, the company wouldn’t be possible.” He added, “Not only have we built a company from scratch, but we put our names on it. How many people can say that? We have the same initials – LGP stands for Luis Gutierrez Plascencia and Lydia Gutierrez Picos.”
Luis and Lydia’s daughter Julissa, now 24, and their son Luis Jr., 22, are also part of the family business. Luis is very grateful for his children and says, “It has been fun to be a family-owned business, with fun and hard work all along the way. My kids were little at the beginning of our company, and I remember them trying to help me with everything. They are still involved today. They are the best kids God could ever send me!”
